Though they’ve been a band for almost six years, it’s the first time LA’s High Places (formerly Brooklyn’s High Places) have played in Bristol. They take the bizarre and make it not only listenable but familiar and tranquil, subduing with outlandish percussive noises, making the sporadic feel cyclic. Whilst Rob Barber enthusiastically rocks back and forth, arms flailing as he hits drum pads, Mary Pearson’s voice and stage presence are the antithesis. Pearson is still and demure; her voice melts into rather than jumps out of the music. But the lack of active attention-seeking does not make them any less worthy of that attention. Endearing is probably too plain a concept when there’s so much darkness implied in her delivery and her character. Perhaps it’s best demonstrated on ‘The Pull’, as she sings “I would give to you/Wrap it up nice and tight for you” over elongated, crystalline tings. Though on paper sentimental, her fragility makes it sound as though she has yielded under duress. It takes faultless tone to inject so much bleakness into such certain phrases, but High Places are experts in synergy.

From my review of High Places/The Hysterical Injury/Hesomagari: Venue. In short: they were SO GREAT.

emptypoolsmusic:

Trinity Centre, Bristol (Tue 17 Jan)

Tonight, any attempt to identify a song by its intro quickly regresses into a game of cheapest reductive jab. “Poor man’s Gang Gang Dance!” “Instrumental Vampire Weekend!” “You know when you put your Tears for Fears records on at the wrong speed…?” To recreate this game at home: play the album through your phone (for the full experience: put your heating on full blast; hastily flick the light on and off).

Sever their high fidelity and M83 fizzle out in a constant fit of pulpy synth arpeggios that swell often in volume but seldom in feeling. It’s a curse of their perfectionism, having an album – a back catalogue – relying so heavily on texture, that shoegaze-influenced dance music (or vice versa) can quickly turn into an 80s high school prom slow dance with the hyperactive kid working the volume knob.

There’s a memorable moment amongst the refuse but it’s a disappointingly predictable one, in the form of the inevitable soundtrack to all future Olympics finishing line montages, ‘Midnight City’. It’s the creaky, high-pitched, distorted vocal hook – catchy and aching in the perfect ratio to induce joyous spells of vertigo – that lifts the song to the level of seriously indisputable highlight: a signifier of a show hardly worth remembering.

‘The Mouse Deer EP’ (EP, self-released)

Girl-group harmonies forged from a single vocal melody and a bounding guitar line. The elegance of a Joni Mitchell ballad veering towards a Disney-esque union of romance and malevolence, as loose handclaps and gutsy bass creep into the mix. Holly McIntosh knows her way around a melody, but has the sense, with a voice both delicate and clean cut, to not let the songs get too pretty – to let the guitars fuzz, to let the cymbals erupt in contained explosions. And when it’s not achieved through dirtiness, it’s a ‘Skylarking’-era XTC kind of weird. Catchy and poppy and instantly likable, yet spiritedly unpredictable. The moment you think you’ve caught the tune or the structure, it slips away like a wet bar of soap. (Leah Pritchard)

These GIF’s remind me of an excerpt from Tina Fey’s book Bossypants:

Amy Poehler was new to SNL and we were all crowded into the seventeenth-floor writers’ room, waiting for the Wednesday read-through to start. There were always a lot of noisy “comedy bits” going on in that room. Amy was in the middle of some such nonsense with Seth Meyers across the table, and she did something vulgar as a joke. I can’t remember what it was exactly, except it was dirty and loud and “unladylike.”

Jimmy Fallon, who was arguably the star of the show at the time, turned to her and in a faux-squeamish voice said: “Stop that! It’s not cute! I don’t like it.”

Amy dropped what she was doing, went black in the eyes for a second, and wheeled around on him. “I don’t fucking care if you like it.” Jimmy was visibly startled. Amy went right back to enjoying her ridiculous bit …

With that exchange, a cosmic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasn’t there to be cute. She wasn’t there to play wives and girlfriends in the boys’ scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not fucking care if you liked it.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, PEOPLE OF MY EARTH.

Here is a video Christmas list I made for my mom approx one year ago that is, sadly, still relevant. Please enjoy! It’s the reason for the season. Listen to reason.

No more gigs for me in 2011, I ended the year on a high note about 10 days ago with Wild Flag. The only reason I went was because when tickets went on sale all my friends were tweeting that they were dead excited to see Wild Flag. I went with the flow, and bloody hell it was good.

With no poncing or faffing around, Wild Flag went on stage, cranked up the volume and just gave it PLENTY. So did the crazy fan who practically joined them on stage for most of the set. She wasn’t quick enough to get the setlist though… I nabbed it and gave it to an even crazier fan who is a friend.

Leah, this pic is for you. Sorry it’s not that great, I, like you, was busy having too much fun. Much love x

I would obviously argue that I am not crazy, but this photo is amazing. More!

Live Review: Holy Stain at Thekla's Festive Fest

Thekla, Bristol (Sun 18 Dec)

It’s Holy Stain’s second to last ever show, so we can forgive them for believing volume is synonymous and interchangeable with enthusiasm. Their joyful send-off; our week of tinnitus. Peppered throughout the set are post-hardcore vocal exchanges which recall At The Drive-in (a sort of musical relay in which the changeover is initiated by a pained scream from the other vocalist); melodic, krautrocky basslines; moments that recall Wire’s guitar tones and others that seem pilfered straight from My Bloody Valentine’s tab book. It’s a mishmash of not-quite-there influences, but what remain consistent are the paint-by-numbers crescendos: start to head bang when the speakers are overloading and the guitarist’s spasms render his face a skin-coloured blur. It’s not a particularly inspiring songwriting method but, for a 30-minute set at an all-day festival, this routine does well to keep the crowd’s attention. During the final song, they invite Big Jeff to yelp poetry over… something. It’s difficult to process exactly what it sounds like. Mostly because Venue’s attention is directed toward the lady pouring her drink on Jeff’s chest as he rubs it in, or worrying about the owner of the glasses he is now wearing, or the diseases he will contract from rolling on the floor. Yet, for a spectacle so intensely physical, the final song stands out as the most musically cohesive and genuine; Jeff’s screams and shouts a freeing, visceral addition, which makes any details of the instrumentation beneath an afterthought.
